SAN FRANCISCO:
NEIGHBORHOODS
As shown on the map below, SFRent.Net’s San Francisco apartment buildings are in Nob Hill, Lower Nob Hill, Lower Pacific Heights, greater Union Square, Tenderloin and the border between Nob Hill and the Downtown Tenderloin called “Tender Nob.” To quickly get acquainted with the neighborhoods where you’ll find our apartments please read on. Of course, nothing beats walking around and getting familiar with the locals and the area’s idiosyncrasies. You can read about all of San Francisco’s multi-faceted neighborhoods at the San Francisco Chronicle’s web site, which also includes a few great maps (please scroll down after the page opens).
NOB HILL & LOWER NOB HILL
Nob Hill is one of the city’s three top neighborhoods in close proximity to everything that downtown San Francisco has to offer. Tourists often huff and puff their way up the steep hills to the city’s luxurious Nob Hill hotels including fabled Fairmont and the bustling Mark Hopkins. If the hill is a bit too steep to scale, they simply hop on the Cable Car. Also atop Nob Hill is the largest Gothic structure in the West -- Grace Cathedral, which happens to be next to Huntington Park – one of the area’s pooch playgrounds! Many people from our nearby buildings can be seen here with their favorite canine companions.
While the core of Nob Hill is along California Street around Mason, the elegance of the area continues down Leavenworth, Jones and Taylor in the direction of Market Street. If you like to be in the midst of everything, and you especially prefer walking over the hassle of driving and parking, this eclectic neighborhood is by far your best bet. The theatre district, the shopping of Union Square and the concentration of great jobs in the financial district entice active people to settle in this area.
Lower Nob Hill is the ideal neighborhood for those who prefer the cachet of the higher echelons of Nob Hill, yet don’t need the extra “hike” or “price tag.” Apartment living in Lower Nob Hill is relaxed and reminds many of Manhatten’s Upper West Side with elegant large multi-unit apartment buildings filled with successful yet laid-back professionals.
SFRent.Net’s buildings in this area include
930 Sutter Street and 780 Post Street.
PACIFIC HEIGHTS (LOWER)
Pacific Heights has most of San Francisco’s status all packed into one neighborhood. Here, the social elite includes famous authors, businesspeople, musicians and even an actor or two who call Pacific Heights their home. If you prefer an atmosphere of stately mansions interspersed with posh elegant apartment buildings and nearby shopping, lower Pacific Heights is the place for you. Take your time to stroll through the nearby cafes and shopping meccas of Fillmore and Union Streets. Your pooch will especially pleased to discover the spacious pet-friendly Lafayette and Alta Plaza parks.
While the majority of Pacific Heights is characterized by private residences, plenty of apartments in Lower Pacific Heights make the area accessible to young professionals. The more southern situated apartments in lower Pacific Heights also have the advantage of being much closer to highways and downtown, while still being in proximity to the amenities that provide such a great lifestyle.
The price for living in this exclusive location can be steep but this area, and the Marina district, attract the greatest concentration of ambitious young professionals who work hard yet don’t forget to play hard too.

1739 Pine Street.
DOWNTOWN UNION SQUARE / TENDER-NOB / TENDERLOIN / CIVIC CENTER
Similar to a traditional town center, Union Square is the place from which all things San Francisco emanate. The square itself has just undergone a much needed $25 million facelift so now the granite central plaza invites street performers and has plenty of space for staged events, art exhibitions, holiday revelry and concerts. Within a concentrated area around Union Square are designer boutiques, hi-end shopping and salons, world class pamper palaces and the department stores you’d expect to see such as Macy’s, Magnin’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue. The area also hosts several prestigious institutions of higher education including the Culinary Academy, the Art Academy, Golden Gate University and Hastings Law School.
As you leave Union Square district and travel west along the main artery of Market Street, within about 10 blocks you’ll reach Civic Center after passing through the Tenderloin. Just south of the transitional Tender-Nob area in the Civic Center district you’ll find the main San Francisco public library, the Asian Art Museum and the famous domed City Hall, the government seat of San Francisco.
In this area, including the Tender-Nob where the Tenderloin and Nob Hill meet, and the tiny predominantly Vietnamese block called Little Saigon, you’ll find some of the most ethnically diverse eating spots in the city, with delicious eateries specializing in cuisine from around the world, within a block or two of the Theater district and Union Square. In walking around this area with its strong waft of curries and lemon grass, you’ll inevitably be lured into a great hole-in-the wall eatery for a culinary delight. Here you will find tremendous value in apartment rentals and fantastic proximity to the main transportation hubs of the BART underground and MUNI busses.
